He obtained his PhD from King's College at the University of Cambridge. He was a GA Selwyn Centenary Research Fellow in Selwyn College at University of Cambridge, Lecturer at University of Southampton and Oxford, and became a Professor of Chemistry at Univeristy of Oxford in 1998. He has been awarded the Meldola Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Royal Society of Chemistry.

Emina currently works on the project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020. The project is focused on photoelectrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into fine chemicals and fuels. Emina also worked on various projects at University College London (UCL), Glasgow and Sheffield University. Projects were focused on electrochemistry in flames, synthesis and structural, thermal and electrical characterisastion of various materials for specific applications including dielectrics and Li ion batteries.
